Defining ESOL priority groups

Slough Borough Council

CFE is currently supporting Slough Borough Council to define its English for Speakers of Other Languages priority groups under the terms of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills ‘new approach to ESOL’.

Slough is one of the department for Business, Innovation and Skills' pilot areas for the implementation of the new approach and it is therefore critical that their process is robust and reliable.

The project involves:

  • a desk-based review of data sets and strategies identifying ESOL priorities
  • an online survey of all relevant stakeholders (including providers and VCS representative organisations)
  • follow up interviews with a sample of stakeholders
  • a research report with potential recommendations
  • a draft completion of the ESOL Action Plan based on research findings
  • support to the ESOL provider group to develop solutions for ESOL delivery in 2010/11
