CFE worked with the Department for Innovation Universities and Skills (DIUS) to support the development of the 2012 Games Employment and Skills Legacy Plan. This was developed to integrate the strategy and policy responsibilities of both DIUS and Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
The work involved researching the skill gaps and requirements for both the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games; gathering and analysing current plans from Regional Development Agencies, Sector Skills Councils, Regional Learning and Skills Councils, National Skills Academies and other relevant sources. These were collated to form a collective view of skills gaps, requirements, and projections for the pre, during and post games period.
CFE also researched a broad range of models and reports on the employment and skills legacy experience of previous games held in Sydney, Athens and Beijing. The work further involved consultation with a range of key stakeholders around 2012 employment and skills plans to understand how projections had been derived and how arrangements for delivery were progressing.
The work will help ensure that the Prime Minister, Minister for the Olympics, and Secretaries of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, and Work and Pensions, have confidence that the 2012 Games will deliver a tangible and ambitious legacy for employment and skills. This impacts on Public Service Agreement (PSA) target 22, ‘Delivering a Successful Olympic and Paralympic Games with a sustainable legacy’, and more broadly on the economy through increased employment and a more highly skilled workforce.
