Role of public libraries in digital participation

Museums, Libraries and Archives Council

CFE was commissioned by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) to support their research to identify the role of libraries in supporting and promoting digital participation.

Building on a survey designed and disseminated by the MLA, the research involved:

  • undertaking analysis of the survey of 112 English Library Authorities
  • producing a report summarising the survey findings and recommendations for future development
  • undertaking a mapping exercise to demonstrate the locations of libraries in England against where there are groups who are considered to be digitally excluded, including people living in deprived areas; and older adults.

The survey highlighted the extent free internet access is available to the public in libraries throughout England, during the day, in the evening and at weekends. The research highlights the crucial role public libraries play in supporting the delivery of the national digital priorities set out by the Government and the Digital Champion, Martha Lane Fox.
